Safety questions

Practice distance & volume measurements with English and Metric units.
Practice temperature and mass measurements.
Practice reading analog guages.
Confirm 1 mL water = 1 gram. Determine volume of sugar using its mass.  Confirm net weight of packaged products.
Quiz on measurements and metric system   Water testing using pH & TDS meter plus various test strips Microscopic examination of water for microbes using pocket microscope. Testing water at home using same equipment as on campus. Also test water from coin-operated dispenser and car wash. Quiz on testing water quality   Understanding the different methods for purifying water.   Sodium polyacrylate beads absorb water and prevent water loss. You will determine how much they grow & who much water they absorb. Compare transpiration (water loss) of plants. Also, measure water consumption from a leak. Quiz on water purification and conservation   CO2 is biggest contributor to global warming.  To cope with global warming and excess heat, you will determine what items are best in blocking infrared light. Prove water is a product of combustion by detecting water in car exhaust.  Quiz on sun spectrum, solar film, and infrared.   Test the UV blocking ability of sunglasses and sunscreens using electronic UV sensor & UV detection beads. Make ozone test strips using potassium iodide and cornstarch. Use the ozone test strips you made to test for ozone in and around your home.   Use the UV detection beads to test UV blocking ability of sunglasses plus car and home windows. Quiz on UV protection and ozone.   Slime:  Cross-linking polyvinyl alcohol polymer using borax. Reverse spherification for molecular gastronomy:  Cross-linking sodium alginate using calcium lactate gluconate. Create a saturated solution of a salt to begin the process of growing crystals. Add a calcium salt to juice, pureed food, or sauce, and inject into a bath of sodium alginate.  This will encapsulate the liquid as spheres. Quiz on UV protection and ozone.   Testing efficiency of bulbs with watt meter and light meter.  Bulb ID using spectroscope.  Measuring UV and IR output. Understanding energy conversion using hand-cranked flashlight.  Also, testing what affects solar cell output. Detect waste heat from cooling fan and from other items. Measuring amount of waste heat produced by a blender.  Using spectroscope to identify energy-efficient or energy-hungry light bulbs. Quiz on Energy   Compare ink from 9 pens to an unknown pen using chromatography Use fluorescein UV sensitive dye to detect leak from a plastic bag representing a waste water retention pond. Dust for prints using black, magnetic, and fluorescent powders. Silver nitrate & cyanoacrylate techniques are also available. Use your UV flashlight to detect automotive fluid leaks under the hood.  Use UV flashlight to detect stains in the house.   Use UV flashlight to detect scorpions in and around the home. Quiz on Energy   Pass tap water between magnets to test if magnets have any affect on water hardness.  This is to debunk the claims by companies that say magnets soften water Dilute fluorescein dye to 6C homeopathic dilution (one trillionth dilution). Use purple laser to find limit of detection. Do checkout of your lab drawer.  You are welcome to keep any items that you think you would like to use at home. Check out bogus products online for "magnetic water softeners" and homeopathic remedies. No post-lab quetsions for Lab 10
