Equipment choices for CHM130LL field chemistry |
The equipment below is slanted to the idea that the kit is a field chemistry kit. That means less breakable items would be in the kit. Also, the items may not be as accurate as those in a traditional lab, but good enough for initial analysis. |
Aluminum case (This is a more rugged version of the one I use for CHM107). Vendor: Harbor Freight Price: $29.99 but $24.99 when on sale. May be able to purchase locally to save shipping but there are taxes. Order 17 on July 16 from Harbor Freight online. |
Digital Balance (0.01 gram accuracy. 300 grams max) Vendor: HoHoTrade.com http://www.hohotrade.com/001-300g-mini-digital-jewelry-balance-pocket-scaletcghr31033-p-15059.html Price: $20.99. Shipping is $15 for first. $6 each for 10 or more. Shipping can take a week. I like the look of this one but the cost may be too high. |
Digital Balance (cheaper version) (0.01 gram accuracy. 300 grams max) Vendor: DealExtreme.com http://www.dealextreme.com/p/pocket-precision-digital-scale-300g-max-0-01g-resolution-15764 Price: $16.54. Shipping is free. Shipping takes about 3 weeks. I ordered 3 of these 6/4/11. Ordered 21 on 7/14. Bulk rate is $16.34 each with total of $342.14. Shipping is $1.70 for registered Air Mail. Your receipt number for this payment is: 3012-5016-7622-7827 Receipt#: 1T484717T77923841 13 more balances ordered on 11/7. |
Butane micro-torch. Vendor: Harbor Freight Price: $8. High but focused temperatures are possible. Safety is probably midrange. It's only $8 at Harbor Freight. Found others a DealExtreme. I ordered a couple of them but haven't test them yet. Probably won't use them in kit. |
Wickless Alcohol Burner, Steel, Single Head Vendor: Online Science Mall http://www.onlinesciencemall.com/Shop/Control/Product/fp/vpid/1787008/vpcsid/0/SFV/30852 Price: $14.95 ($7.60 shipping cost) All metal, leak proof alcohol burner. Permanent wick, no replacements needed. Tank capacity 100mL, sufficient for 1.5 hours of use. The 'wick' portion is a ceramic fiber inserted into a thin copper tube. This construction allows for constant flame. The burner is fueled by denatured ethanol or Everclear 95% ethanol. A draft shield, flame snuffer, rubber keeper and instruction manual are included. This unit can be tipped and will not leak. The chrome plated tank is fitted with a screw top and rubber gasket for longer burning times. The burner is 3 wide by 3 1/8 high. |
Wickless Alcohol Burner, Steel, Single Head Vendor: Home Science Tools http://www.hometrainingtools.com/alcohol-lamp-stand-set/p/CE-LAMPKIT/ Price: $10.95 ($9.95 for 10 or more) (low shipping costs) 8.40 for burner alone. This is the cheapest one found so far. The video they showed said this can boil 250mL of water in about 10 to 15 minutes. It would be a good idea to have a ceramic tile for the burner to sit on since the metal base gets quite hot. http://www.hometrainingtools.com/images/art/CE-LAMPWeb.pdf I ordered one of these on 6/6/11. Arrived. Ordered 24 on 7/14. Cost $238 plus $6.95 shipping
Sterno (alternative to alcohol burner above) Vendors: Multiple ones Price: About $2.50 for 2.6 oz version. These are a cheaper way to go for minimum usage. So it depends on how much heating will be needed in the labs.
Tea Candles Vendors: Many Price: Cheap Probably the safest and cheapest heat source but put out the least amount of heat. These tea candles are what is put in the chemistry kits used by South Mountain. In some situations, the heat from a candle is all that is needed. However, for boiling water (except in a test tube) these wouldn't work. Perhaps the kit can have more than one kind of heat source if the prices are low enough. |
Right angle clamp Vendor: Home Science Tools http://www.hometrainingtools.com/clamp-right-angle/p/CE-RCLAMP/ Price: $2.90 when ordering 10 or more. Shipping cost low. I ordered 10 on 6/6/11. Instead of a ring stand, this might clamp to side of the kit's case. The extension clamp below may be used to hold test tube or flask. Arrived (Probably will not used in kit) |
Extension clamp Vendor: Home Science Tools http://www.hometrainingtools.com/extension-clamp-10/p/CE-CLMPEXT/ Price: $6.95 I ordered one on 6/6/11. This came in but didn't look like the one in the photo. Hook up to case doesn't quite work with the right angle clamp. Arrived, but looks different than photo. (Probably will not used in kit) |
Multimeter Vendor: Harbor Freight Price: $4 ($2.99 online but shipping was about $14 for whole ) The kit could use a multimeter for doing conductivity (electrolyte) tests . It could also be used for activity series, single-replacement reactions, and other electrochemical reactions. There will be a need to adapt the existing probes to probes that will be inert such as carbon (like mechanical pencil lead). Platinum would be better but too expensive. (Decided not to use multimeter as TDS meter). Will buy TDS meter, but may still get multimeter for other experiements. |
Graduated Cylinders (100mL and 10mL, plastic, light weight) Vendor: Delta Education http://www.delta-education.com/productdetail.aspx?campID=D610&PartNo=070-2140 Price: $2.45 for 100mL, $1.50 for 10mL (plus shipping) This is a cheap version of those used in labs, but it is lightweight and the plastic is very clear for good observation of the meniscus. These are like the ones used by Rio Salado and South Mountain. Will look for 10mL grad cylinder with 0.1 mL markings (Found one. See below). Decided to also get the 25mL grad cylinder as well. Ordered 24 100mL graduated cylinders 7/14 at $2.50 each Shipping $12.10. Sales Tax $6.32 . Grand total $119.32. |
Graduated Cylinder (10mL, plastic, light weight) Vendor: Bel-Art on Amazon Price: $3.49 for 10mL, (plus shipping) This one has 0.1 mL markings. 3 ordered on 6/24 (Arrived) 21 ordered from Amazon on 7/15. Price had jumped to $3.75. Total $78.75. No shipping cost due to Super Saver Shipping. Order Number: 002-7273742-7213035 |

Scoopula Vendor: Science Company. http://secure.sciencecompany.com/Scoopula-Stainless-Steel-6-inch-P16134.aspx $1.60. Ordered and received it, but don't think it that useful. Can't fit within a test tube. |
Lab stand at http://secure.sciencecompany.com/Lab-Support-Stands-C620.aspx $12.50 20 inch long rod. | |
TDS Tester. Vendor: The Science Company http://secure.sciencecompany.com/HM-Digital-Economy-TDS-Meter-TDS-EZ-P16349.aspx HM Digital Economy TDS Meter, TDS-EZ 3 more ordered from Science Company on 8/21. order number106994. Also ordered was 1 lb CaCO3. |
