This is the cheapest one found so far. The video they showed said this can boil 250mL of water in about 10 to 15 minutes. It would be a good idea to have a ceramic tile for the burner to sit on since the metal base gets quite hot.

Tea Candles

Probably the safest and cheapest heat source but put out the least amount of heat. These tea candles are what is put in the chemistry kits used by South Mountain. In some situations, the heat from a candle is all that is needed. However, for boiling water (except in a test tube) these wouldn't work.

Perhaps the kit can have more than one kind of heat source if the prices are low enough.

The kit could use a multimeter for doing conductivity (electrolyte) tests . It could also be used for activity series, single-replacement reactions, and other electrochemical reactions. There will be a need to adapt the existing probes to probes that will be inert such as carbon (like mechanical pencil lead). Platinum would be better but too expensive. (Decided not to use multimeter as TDS meter). Will buy TDS meter, but may still get multimeter for other experiements.
